Melissa, Ziell and Sharon's Nail Art Learning Story

Learners: Melissa, Ziell & Sharon
Learning Coach: T.Dillner           Date: Week 8, Term 2
Learning Area: Visual Art             Key Competency: Using Language, Symbols & Text
Learning Observed
Melissa, Ziell and Sharon chose to participate in an iExperience that involved using a cork tile, hammer, nails and thread to create an artwork. The aim of this artwork was to ‘Pay it Forward’. They needed to think about someone in their life who they could encourage by gifting them their cork tile. The learners needed to plan out their design and colour choice based on the person they had in mind to receive their finished work (connected).
Melissa, Ziell and Sharon collaborated to overcome challenges and to help each other make decisions about colours. They extended their capabilities by safely using a hammer to put in the nails and show thought about how close/far apart each nail needed to be.

Next Learning Steps
  • Write a letter/postcard to the person who will be receiving the tile. Tell them about what the materials are and how it was made.
  • Display tiles in the habitat and talk to other learners about how they were made.

Fraction Narrative

Learner: Sereya, Nishita, Melissa    Learning Coach: Mr Hattie
Date: 30 March 2016
Learning Area: Learning Habitat 1 - Mathematics
Learning Observed
In Maths we are looking at finding fractions out of materials. Today we were focusing on quarters. Sereya, Nishita and Melissa had to make 4 even groups with the counters. We looked at a range of different amounts. There were many different levels of Capabilities when we broke off into groups. But Sereya, Nishita and Melissa did well to Collaborate and figure out how to solve the problems. They used equal sharing to arrange the counters into the correct amounts. I was very impressed with how well Sereya, Nishita and Melissa worked today, this has been something that we have been working on for a while and we have successfully achieved it.

Next Learning Steps
Sereya, Nishita and Melissa next learning steps are to:
  • Use skip counting to solve equal sharing.
  • Find basic fractions from a specific amount using imaging.
  • Order fractions with the same denominator.
