Learner:  Melissa and Disha     Learning Coach:  Mr Hattie      Date: 13 March 2015
Learning Area: Learning Habitat 2 - Mathematics
Learning Observed
Melissa and Disha were playing a math game during our group lesson. In the game they had to roll two dice and plus the numbers together using the number line. This game was proving difficult for the group. We discussed how we can solve the problem on our hands by starting at one number then counting on from that number. When looking at the number line Melissa pointed to the number ‘6’ she looked a bit confused for a moment, then using her other hand she pointed at 7, then 8, then 9. She said “6 + 3 = 9” and had a massive smile on her face. Disha’s turn was next and she had been watching Melissa’s turn intently. She rolled “3 + 1” and she looked at the number line and pointed at 3 and counted one more. Both learners were very proud of themselves. The game carried on and both learners continued to get the correct answers.
Evidence of learning

Melissa showing us how she can use a number line to solve the problem “6 + 2”. She was able to say the problem and the answer.

Disha showing us the answer to the problem. She was able to say the problem and the correct answer. Following on from this problem she got “4 + 5” and “6 + 3” It was great to watch them understand the concept and apply it to the game.
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Melissa showed the Key Competency “thinking” as she was able to think about the way she uses her fingers to solve the problem and adapt it to work on the number line. Disha showed “thinking” as she was able to understand that watching how someone else does it and do the same thing on her turn. Both learners showed “understanding symbols and language” as the knew that the plus symbol meant that they needed to add more onto the number. The Key Competency “managing self” was shown as the game was continued well after the lesson was over. It was played correctly and independently.
Next Learning Steps
Melissa and Disha’s next learning steps are:
  • adding by imaging.
  • subtracting numbers to 10 using a number line.
  • counting on from larger numbers.
