Learning Area: Learning Habitat 2 - Handwriting
Learning Observed
For literacy we have been focusing on handwriting every thursday. This was because we saw many learners struggling with writing or complaining about sore hands while writing. This can affect the amount of writing they are doing which could have an impact on their achievement in writing. We were using the Casey the Caterpillar Handwriting Shapes to help the learner remember the correct formation. This has made some improvements to the amount the learners are writing as they are writing me fluidly. Melissa has been working on writing more fluidly and she has been improving her capabilities in writing. She was pleased with her efforts in writing and was telling me which of her letters were her best ones and why.

Key Competencies/Vision Principles
A Key Competencies that is being shown in this lesson is “understand language, symbols and text” as the learners are learning the correct formation of the letters. The Vision Principles that are being used are “Capabilities” as the learners are improving their writing capabilities and “Connecting” as they are learning the link between handwriting and writing full sentences.

Learning Observed
Melissa, Micah, James, and Marcus are part of the ‘How to - Instructional Writing’ iExplore group. They are looking at making superhero badges and being able to create instructions to go with these. Today we explored how to use the iPad program ‘Comic life’, to present our instructions. In iExplore time today I overheard lots of discussion as to where the best place to put a speech bubble was. Micah mentioned “it can’t be there we won't see the writing.” Melissa was saying that the speech bubble needed to be more in the center. James and Marcus were working out what the best thing to say for this photo. I was impressed with the collaboration skills they were demonstrating.

Key Competencies/Vision Principles
The Key Competencies I observed are “THINKING” about where things go and what to say for each photo. The Vision Principles being used are “COLLABORATION” as they work together to create their comic. They are “CONNECTING” their CAPABILITIES” in writing to create their instructions.

Learning Area: iExplore - Reflections - Science
Learning Observed
Melissa choose to be a part of the iExplore group looking at reflections. We first brainstormed where we would be able to see our reflections. Then we had walk around the school to see what we could find our reflection in. As a group we decided that we all wanted to explore reflections with mirrors. We spent time using mirrors to create reflections. We discovered that you could get the sun on the mirror and send it around the room, you can look under things like the shelves on wheels, if you hold your mirror up to another mirror you can see lots of mirrors and we explored mirror writing.

Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Melissa showed Collaboration by working with other Learners to investigate different ways to show/ find reflections (Participating and Contributing). They also showed that they were Capable by sharing their learning back on the video.
Melissa explored many different ways to reflect with mirrors (Thinking).

Narrative Assessment - iExperience Soccer Skills
Learner: Melissa Learning Coach: Mr Hattie Date: 21 July 2015

Learning Area: Learning Habitat two - iExperience
Learning Observed
For iExperience we are playing soccer. We are developing our capabilities in collaboration through team sports. In this session we were learning to pass the ball to a buddy and ‘Trap’ the ball. ‘Trapping’ is when you stop the ball rolling by placing your foot on top of the ball. This skill is to help gain control of the ball before you pass. Melissa in this session showed great capabilities. At the start of the session she struggled with this skill as it is a new skill that she was learning. But by the end of the session she was able to trap the ball for control and pass the ball to her buddy with the correct part of the her foot.

Melissa showing the correct technique with bringing her foot back and placing her non-kicking foot next to the ball facing her target.
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
During this session Melissa was showing the Key Competency “Relating to others” as she was participating in a group activity with a person who may have picked up the skill either faster or slower than them. She had to help, encourage and work with her partner. Melissa was showing “Capabilities” as these skills were new to her and she had to develop them during the session. Also “Collaborative” was being shown as during the session she was working the whole time with a buddy.

Learning Area: Learning Habitat 2 - Literacy
Learning Observed
In literacy Melissa has been working really hard. In our lesson we were working on thinking of questions that we want to find out about our books. Melissa has been developing her capabilities with her reading and had been moved on to the Blue Level. This is moving her closer to the National Standards. Melissa was reading about when Gran came to stay. Her question was “Will Gran help Ben paint the special box?” This was showing that she is able to be Curious. This is great to see as she is learning about our School Values. During the lesson she got very excited when she found out the answer to her question.

Melissa was showing the Key Competency “Thinking” as she had to think about the text and what she was curious about. She was also showing “Managing self” because this activity was an independent task during her reading. She read the story out loud and was trying to find the answer to her question.

Learner: Melissa and Disha Learning Coach: Mr Hattie Date: 13 March 2015
Learning Area: Learning Habitat 2 - Mathematics
Learning Observed
Melissa and Disha were playing a math game during our group lesson. In the game they had to roll two dice and plus the numbers together using the number line. This game was proving difficult for the group. We discussed how we can solve the problem on our hands by starting at one number then counting on from that number. When looking at the number line Melissa pointed to the number ‘6’ she looked a bit confused for a moment, then using her other hand she pointed at 7, then 8, then 9. She said “6 + 3 = 9” and had a massive smile on her face. Disha’s turn was next and she had been watching Melissa’s turn intently. She rolled “3 + 1” and she looked at the number line and pointed at 3 and counted one more. Both learners were very proud of themselves. The game carried on and both learners continued to get the correct answers.
Evidence of learning
Melissa showing us how she can use a number line to solve the problem “6 + 2”. She was able to say the problem and the answer.
Disha showing us the answer to the problem. She was able to say the problem and the correct answer. Following on from this problem she got “4 + 5” and “6 + 3” It was great to watch them understand the concept and apply it to the game.
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Melissa showed the Key Competency “thinking” as she was able to think about the way she uses her fingers to solve the problem and adapt it to work on the number line. Disha showed “thinking” as she was able to understand that watching how someone else does it and do the same thing on her turn. Both learners showed “understanding symbols and language” as the knew that the plus symbol meant that they needed to add more onto the number. The Key Competency “managing self” was shown as the game was continued well after the lesson was over. It was played correctly and independently.
